Voice marketing is pretty new. You’d be forgiven for not knowing what it is.
It is basically this: Marketing, but through smart voice assistants.
What is a smart voice assistant? Amazon Alexa, Google Home, etc. The AI bots in living rooms, kitchens, and cars everywhere. Yes, you can market through them. Why would you? Well, that’s another question.
Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are designed to have conversations. They’re designed to be helpful. To answer intelligently when people ask them all sorts of questions. They started out being pretty bad at this, but now they’re pretty good. That’s because two of the biggest corporations on the planet have been pouring money into their development for over 10 years.
Now that they’ve gotten good at answering a lot of questions, a lot of people are buying them. In fact, over one third of Americans owns a smart speaker device.
What’s great about these little devices (from your perspective) is that you can control them. Amazon and Google have created the basic infrastructure, but they have opened it up to everyone to use.
And there’s the marketing opportunity. Marketing is for getting people to pay attention to you, so that eventually some of them will buy something from you.
Now all these controllable, intelligent conversation robots are interacting with more and more people all the time. If you can control them well enough, you can use them to interact with people on your behalf. You can use these robots to give people value by inspiring them, helping them with a task, or something else. When you do, they will pay attention to you. And when people pay attention to you, they are much more likely to buy something from you.
That’s voice marketing: controlling these intelligent conversation robots in order to get people to pay attention to you, so that some of them will buy something from you.
Okay, so how do you actually do the robot controlling part? That’s where a number of tools come in.
There’s the one I made, Shoutworks, which lets you control Amazon Alexa in a few clicks from your WordPress site. This one is designed to let you finish the job within 10 minutes.
If you want to go more advanced, there’s also Voiceflow, which lets you design from scratch and publish to both Alexa and Google. You’ll get more customizability, but there is a steeper learning curve.
